Language
You'll have no trouble getting around in English — it's the island's official language. Many Dominicans also speak Kwéyòl, a creole that blends French and Carib vocabulary with grammatical patterns rooted in West African languages. In a handful of villages in the north, you may also hear Kokoy, a local English dialect.
Money & Payments
The Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) is the official currency, pegged at roughly EC$2.67 to US$1. You won't need to convert everything, though — US dollars, British pounds, and euros are accepted by businesses across the island.
Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) are taken at most tourism-oriented businesses, including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and car rental companies. Traveler's cheques are also widely honoured.
Banks operating on the island include the National Bank of Dominica, Republic Bank, Griffon Bank, the Dominica Agricultural Industrial & Development Bank, and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.
Opening Hours
Most businesses operate weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., typically closing for lunch between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. On Saturdays, shops generally open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Banks keep shorter hours: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, extending to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. Banks are closed on Saturdays.
Staying Connected
Dominica's telecommunications network is modern and dependable. The two main mobile providers are FLOW and Digicel, public phones are easy to find in town and in most communities, and hotels offer international direct dialing from guest rooms. The island's area code is 767.
Electricity
The island runs on 220/240 volts. If you're bringing devices from North America, pack a voltage converter — though many accommodations are equipped with dual outlets. It's worth confirming with your hotel or guesthouse before you travel.
Health & Medical Care
Dominica has three public hospitals: the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (the island's main facility), Portsmouth Hospital, and Marigot Hospital. Intensive care units are available at both the Dominica China Friendship Hospital and Portsmouth Hospital, and a number of general practitioners and specialists run private clinics.
Safety & Emergencies
Dominica consistently ranks among the safest destinations in the Caribbean, with one of the region's lowest crime rates. As anywhere, the usual common-sense precautions with your belongings go a long way.
For police, fire, or ambulance, dial 999.
Time Zone
Dominica observes Atlantic Standard Time year-round (GMT-4). That's one hour ahead of US Eastern Standard Time and identical to Eastern Daylight Time — so during North American summer, there's no time difference with the US East Coast.
Weather & What to Pack
Expect warm, sunny days punctuated by short tropical showers — it's that frequent rainfall that keeps the rainforest lush and the rivers, lakes, and waterfalls flowing. Temperatures average around 27°C (81°F) year-round. Coastal areas see about 1,780 mm of rain annually, while the mountainous interior receives roughly three times that.
Pack with the tropics in mind: light, breathable clothing, a rain layer, sun protection, and sturdy footwear if hiking is on your itinerary.
