The New International Airport: What It Changes, and What It Doesn't Yet

Dominica is building its first international airport at Wesley, on the northeast coast. A 2,850-metre runway, built to take large jets and direct flights from North America and Europe, replacing Douglas-Charles as the island's main gateway. It is the largest construction project in the country's history, and completion is targeted ahead of the winter 2027 season.

That matters more than it might sound. Air access has long been the single biggest friction in visiting Dominica. Not the cost of being here, but the cost and awkwardness of getting here. Remove that and the calculation changes for a lot of travellers.

But here is the honest part: it does not help you this year.

Getting here in 2026 still means a connection, usually through Antigua, Barbados, St Lucia or Guadeloupe, and then either a short hop into Douglas-Charles or Canefield, or the ferry across from Guadeloupe or Martinique. The ferry is worth considering if you are coming from the French islands. It is often cheaper, and the crossing is beautiful.

Plan for the connection. Give yourself a real buffer rather than the tightest transfer on offer, because a missed link here can mean an unplanned overnight somewhere else.
